Bedwetting

Bedwetting is a common problem with many children and seems to be more often among boys then girls. Bedwetting can be a very trying time for your child emotionally as she or he may not feel comfortable sleeping over at friend’s homes or with family. Also keep in mind that bedwetting is not considered a medical problem until after the age of 5. Ensure you give loving support to your child as they grow through this challenging time.

If your child is wetting the bed regularly and complains of noticeably increased thirst, increased urination, fatigue and increased appetite, consult your Naturopath (may be symptoms of diabetes). Also a child who wets the bed and complains about abdominal pain may have an infection.

Conventional Treatment
DDAVP Desmopressin acetate is a drug that may be prescribed for some children. This drug is a nasal spray that increases the production of the antidiuretic hormone, which helps the body reabsorb water and therefore hold back urine.

Imipramine (Tofranil) may also be prescribed for bedwetting although much less then it once was. This reduces the irritability in the bladder to help a child experience less frequent urination. Side effects can be nervousness, restlessness, sleep disorders and gastrointestinal disturbances.

Nutrition and Recommendations
You may want to watch for food allergies in your child. Often bedwetting can be triggered by an allergy. The most common food allergies are dairy products, wheat and citrus fruits. Try an elimination diet to determine if an allergy is present.

Also eliminate caffeine before bedtime (chocolate, sodas), as caffeine increases urination.

Finally eliminating sugar before bedtime can also be useful.

Calcium and Magnesium is helpful for a child wetting the bed due to nerves. This supplement helps to relax the nervous system.
One dose twice a day in the morning and evening.

Talking with your child is useful as well. Make sure there hasn’t been any new life events that are causing emotional upset for you child. If your child seems fine, ensure they feel comforted that this isn’t a big deal and before they know it, they will wake up with a dry bed.
