Headache

Headaches can be caused by muscle tension, underlying illness, infection or disturbances in the blood vessels of the head. They are often associated with fever, food allergy, emotional upset, liver congestion and emotional upset. Food intolerances or allergies are often associated with migraine headaches. Some of the trigger foods are chocolate, cheese, citrus or fermented foods (alcohol). Children with headaches often have a family history of migraines. A migraine may also be accompanied by vomiting, vision disturbances and can last for hours.

Headaches due to constipation require more water intake which also helps with the problem of constipation. Relaxants, lemon balm, oats and skullcap can relieve headaches brought on by tension.

Children with headaches may be unable to tell you what is bothering them, the pain often worsens as the day goes on yet can be relieved by sleep.

Conventional Treatment
The usual treatment for a headache is to take Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen. Both of these are quite effective in relieving a headache, although both also have their side effects if taken in high doses or over a long period of time. New research has been linking Ibuprofen to heart problems and Acetaminophen in large doses is being linked to liver damage.

Nutrition and Recommendations
Children that are prone to headaches need to ensure they are having three whole food meals a day as low blood sugar can trigger a headache. Do not offer sugary foods as this can cause blood sugar levels to soar.

Chocolate, the preservatives in hot dogs and MSG have all been known to cause headaches. Any food allergy can provoke or cause a headache, stay away from any of these allergy causing foods. It would be beneficial to try an elimination diet to see what may be triggering the headaches.

Calcium and Magnesium can help calm muscles and relax blood vessels. A deficiency in Magnesium has been shown to bring on migraines.

EPA supplement can be very useful for persistent migraines. This supplement is derived from fish oils and can help to thin the blood and block the cycle that leads to recurrent headaches.

There are many herbal remedies for specific types of headaches, try a remedy that is specific to the type of headache your child is having.

Ensure your child is resting; a dark room and cool washcloth over you child’s head can be very soothing.
