PREGNANT? WATCH YOUR INTAKE OF SUSHI

As sushi becomes even more popular as a staple food in our diets , especially for us on the Westcoast we need to ensure we watch what we consume especially for children and pregnant women. It's upsetting to me that this is another issue that many pregnant women are not informed of. Most tuna does contain high levels of mercury that can be very harmful to your unborn child.

Excessive mercury can cause neurodevelopmental issues to an unborn child, mental retardation, blindness, cerebral palsy and deafness. In a study done in the US they tested the mercury levels of tuna found in sushi of american restaurants, the safe levels needed to be at .1 and were as high as .344 and .351. These levels are considered unsafe by the WHO (World Health Organization). Therefore if you are pregnant it probably in your and baby's best interest to avoid tuna.
